Troja Chateau in Prague
Troja Chateau stands beside Prague Zoo on the northern bank of the Vltava. The salmon-colored Baroque residence, formal garden and theatrical exterior staircase create a strong visual change from the medieval streets of central Prague.

A Baroque residence for the Sternberg family
Count Václav Vojtěch of Sternberg commissioned the chateau in the late seventeenth century. Jean Baptiste Mathey designed an Italian-influenced villa that faced its garden rather than a fortified castle. The external staircase uses sculpture to turn the approach into a scene from classical mythology.
Inside, the main hall is covered by a large illusionistic fresco celebrating a Habsburg victory over the Ottoman army. Painted architecture expands the room beyond its physical walls. Smaller rooms and changing gallery displays reward a slower circuit after the staircase photographs.
Garden and photography
Geometric paths, clipped planting and fountains organize the formal garden in front of the chateau. The central axis gives a direct view of the facade, while side paths help separate portraits from the symmetry. Seasonal flowers and leaf cover change the balance of color across the grounds. Photography rules may differ between the garden, permanent interiors and temporary exhibitions. Check signs before using a tripod or photographing artwork. Cloudy light handles the pale facade well, and a short telephoto lens compresses the staircase sculptures against the upper level.
Getting there and combining Troja sights
Public transport routes commonly connect through Nádraží Holešovice and continue by bus to the zoo area. Seasonal ferries and boats may create another approach, subject to current operation and river conditions. The chateau entrance sits close to the zoo’s lower gate.
